The crockpot wins again – Spiced Applesauce

I love applesauce.

Let me just throw that confession out there right now. I don’t however like the canned, sugary, store bought applesauce. While you can pretty easily make applesauce on the stove, making it in the crockpot is incredibly simple & practically impossible to screw up. Due to it’s idiot proofness(don’t forget two & a half years ago I didn’t know how to make pancakes), I love this recipe. It is great also if you have apples that have been sitting around a little too long and have started to get a little squishy.

I found this recipe off of another website but I apologize, I cannot for the life of me remember which one! Anyway, If you have a crockpot this is one recipe worth trying!

Spiced Crockpot Applesauce

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 8 apples
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Peel, core & slice apples(I love these wonderful inventions that do the coring & slicing for you!). Add to the crockpot with the water. Cook on low 6-8 hours or until apples can easily be mashed with a fork. Completely mash the apples with a large fork or a potato masher. Add pumpkin pie spice(will turn the applesauce dark brown) and allow to cook an additional 30 minutes.

Note: If you have an infant, you can skip the spices and puree in the blender for a homemade baby food.

From one of my readers: The only variation I would suggest on this is to save the peels and put them in the pot with the apples (or in a small pot on the stove to be added to the crock pot later). Once they are cooked, a trip through be blender makes them easy to consume and adds color and more fiber to the end product and less waste on a perfectly good food source. (Thanks Toni!)

Simple right?

Peeled & Sliced

Mashing with a fork

Ready for the spice

Final product

Makes approximately 5 cups

See, I told you it was easy. :-D

I love making apple butter in the crock pot! What you need is a Roma food mill. It makes this even easier! <3 mine! Loving your blog too Nicole. (Oh, and btw despite my baking and canning growing up, and all the continued coking I do, I still can not make an American pancake to save my life! lol)
